ROH is pleased to share our presentation of works by I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (1966-2006, Bali, Indonesia) for Art Basel Parcours 2026, curated by Stefanie Hessler.
I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih, known as Murni, developed a unique, deeply personal, and emotionally charged body of paintings and drawings marked by her lived experience of migration and resilient pleasure, often focusing on female desire beyond societal conventions. Parcours features a selection of Murni's drawings and rarely seen soft sculptures. Featuring deceptively simple forms, the works are charged with psychological intensity. Hands merge with breasts, and organic shapes dissolve into spiral patterns. These metamorphoses reflect personal thoughts and emotions; they are documents of the artist’s life and the material and psychic conditions under which she worked. Murni made her drawings at night, outside of the disciplinary economies and rationalized labor time of the studio. Interrupting hours of rest, the works are marked by dream-like imagery, wavering between wakefulness and sleep, between the conscious and the unconscious. From within these liminal spaces emerge powerful, playful, and sensuous images beyond sanctioned social and representational orders of form.
