ROH is pleased to share installation photos of π˜“π˜’π˜³π˜΅π˜Άπ˜€π˜ͺ𝘳𝘒 𝘍π˜ͺ𝘦𝘭π˜₯, Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi's first institutional exhibition in China with Yuz Museum, Shanghai.

As a public art project of Yuz Museum to engage with the community around Panlong Tiandi, the idea of π˜“π˜’π˜³π˜΅π˜Άπ˜€π˜ͺ𝘳𝘒 𝘍π˜ͺ𝘦𝘭π˜₯ originates from Indonesian artist Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi’s reflection on local culture, ecology and community.

π˜“π˜’π˜³π˜΅π˜Άπ˜€π˜ͺ𝘳𝘒 𝘍π˜ͺ𝘦𝘭π˜₯ includes Garibaldi’s eponymous series of outdoor, white plaster sculptures, displayed across the museum’s gardens and Panlong Tiandi area. Following the series’ interest in site-specific considerations of various ecologies, these sculptures contain locally cultivated mushrooms within plaster, the latter material acting as cavities for various forms of fungi that will grow throughout and beyond the presentation’s duration. Garibaldi’s site-specific mural on the museum’s exterior wall extends the ecology of β€œLartucira Field”, inviting the Panlong Tiandi public to participate in its proliferation of an abstracted mycelial growth.

Garibaldi’s works interweave images of growth, decay, and regeneration into a visual narrative that bridges temporal and cultural dimensions. This project also aspires to change the way people see nature through interactive and co-creation experiences, fostering the understanding of life and the awareness of ecological balance and symbiosis of all living things.

Born 1985, Jakarta, Indonesia
Lives and works in Bandung, Indonesia

Syaiful Aulia Garibaldi obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art, Printmaking Studio from the Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology, Bandung, Indonesia in 2010 and his Master's Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia in 2023. Syaiful, fondly known as Tepu, previously pursued education in agronomy before pursuing experimental fine arts, where he applies his scientific background to create a conceptual foundation for his art. Tepu’s works in installation, painting, drawing, printmaking and video show a remarkably strong vision of art that collides with science in a graceful manner. His creation of an immersive environment was sparked by his interest in the networked and interconnected nature of ecologies, and the evocative power of microorganisms as symbols of death and decay, as well as life. Infusion between art and science transcends through Tepu’s work and gives way to a new gateway of knowledge, which is illuminated within his prints and installations.
