ROH is delighted to share ikkibawiKrrr’s upcoming solo exhibition, Lalu, Lagu Lalu Lalu: Then, Another Passing Song, continuing the visual research band’s journey of expanded belonging, untethered to place and time.
How do we meet our ancestors when we have lost our ground, both as a physical space and a sense of belonging? Lalu, Lagu Lalu Lalu directly follows the collective’s presentation in Basel, Lalu, Lagu Lalu Lalu: Then, Another Passing Song, extending their focus on stones and places that endure time through their seclusion from urban life.
The installation brings together research conducted across South Korea and Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, developed in ongoing relationship with communities who hold an unbroken proximity to their ancestral lives, rather than treating preserved relics as heritage. ikkibawiKrrr’s practice of charcoal rubbing, which they affectionately term as to “rock n’ feel”, is to touch time through physical contact with weathered stone surfaces. From this contact, ikkibawiKrrr develops a practice that moves across musical, sculptural, performance and documentary means, participating in the continuous presence of art in life.
ikkibawiKrrr (established 2021, South Korea) is a visual research band consisting of members Gyeol Ko and Jieun Cho. Their artistic approach is informed by the traits of moss, which expand their worlds by interacting closely with their surroundings along the thin boundary between air and soil.

In Korean, ikkibawi means “moss-rock”, and krrr is an onomatopoeic word. Mosses live in the thin boundary between air and soil, adapt to their surroundings despite their tiny bodies, and expand their world along other worlds. Incorporating the survival tactics of moss into their projects and attitudes, the collective hopes to circulate its practice beyond individual projects and extend the boundary layer between life and art.
