ROH is delighted to present Yuyan Wang’s short film, One Thousand and One Attempts to Be an Ocean, at Basel Social Club — Office edition. This year’s edition transforms a vacant multi-story office building into a temporary social stage for art, reconsidering the workplace not as a site of production, but of critical reflection.
One Thousand and One Attempts to Be an Ocean reflects on the experience of not being able to see the world with depth perception. Composed of micro-events from "satisfying videos” that swarm on the internet, an abstract narrative unfolds by referring to trance and minimal music. It's an exploration of a world that can all too often fall into the superficial that recognises its pleasures as well as its pitfalls.
Yuyan Wang (b. 1989, China) is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist living in Paris. She graduated from Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts in 2020 and Beaux-Arts of Paris in 2016. She takes inspiration from the endless media production underpinned by industrial productivity. Her works oscillate between film and installation, often in an immersive perspective with a disintegrating abstraction process.
