ROH Art Jakarta 2025

For Art Jakarta 2025, ROH presents a curated presentation, Warna Ibu, approaching the mother as a condition shaped by terrains across the personal, ecological and historical. The mother here is explored as an ongoing relation that is chosen and embodied, distributed across various understandings of care and labour. Other works consider how the maternal has been historically invoked to embody origins, standing in for ideas of birth and continuity. How the idea of a maternal relation and its permutations may inspire new ways of relating across human and non-human life, is an open question that is explored throughout the presentation.

ROH is delighted to present a single-work presentation of the Balinese artist, Oototol, at Art Jakarta 2025. The paintings of the late Oototol question inherited ideas relating to biography and tradition, placing figures of authority in a breadth of situations which act to displace hierarchies and teleologies. This unique work offers an intimate portrayal of an enigmatic birth arranged across a batik-print mat, exampling the joyful curiosity of human life that Oototol was so attuned to.

Furthermore, ROH will highlight a large-scale installation by Aditya Novali, Object Permanence. The five-meter-tall sculpture, inspired by a fragment of an old wooden wardrobe inherited from his grandmother, is a testament to the strength of his practice of combining technical precision with deeply personal and emotional propositions.

Aditya Novali works with a variety of materials, often first conceiving an idea and then finding the right medium to transcribe his vision. His background in architecture influences his sensitivity to structure, space, and knowledge of construction – key elements of his approach and aesthetic. Addressing themes such as boundaries, identities, materialism, and urban life, Novali’s work interacts with the viewer and transforms with each viewing.

Novali received his Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture from Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung, Indonesia, in 2002; and an IM Master of Conceptual Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 2008. Novali’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions both locally and internationally. Selected solo exhibitions include Ends at Nova Contemporary, Bangkok, Thailand (2024); New Obsolescence: ADITYAVOVALI at ROH, Jakarta, Indonesia (2023); WHY at Tumurun Museum, Solo, Indonesia (2022); ME:DI:UM with ROH Projects at Liste Art Fair, Basel, Switzerland (2019); Significant Other at ShanghArt Gallery, Singapore (2019); Caprice with ROH Projects at Art Basel Hong Kong: Discoveries, Hong Kong (2018); and ACRYLIC at ROH Projects, Jakarta, Indonesia (2016).
